Day 1 – Team I

Day 1 we studied about basics of business analytic's and SPSS tool

Benefits of business analytics (Why to study business analytics):

·         Improving the decision-making process.
·         Speeding up the decision-making process
·         Better alignment of resources with strategies.
·         Realizing cost efficiencies.
·         Responding to user needs for availability of data on a timely basis.

There are many tools that can  be used for the Data analysis like SPSS, STATA, Excel, MINITAB etc.
We started using SPSS tool for data analysis. After studying basic of SPSS data view and variable view we used Descriptive statistics.

Descriptive Statistics in SPSS:
Descriptive statistics -> frequencies:  The frequencies command can be used to determine quartiles, percentiles, measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode) and also to represent the data in chart form.

Descriptive statistics -> crosstab:  The frequency command is used to obtain counts for one variable values, whereas the crosstab command is used to obtain counts for more than one variable's values.
Example- Comparing the variable between people marital status and their education.

We used Transform- record in variables for categorising the variable. Example we can categorise the age in ranges (like 13-19, 20-30) to make analysis simple instead of checking for each age.

Then we studied to use chi square in crosstab. Chi square is used to check the relationship existence between two variables.
First we have to frame null hypothesis. In chi-square null hypothesis will always be “No relation between the two variables”.
Then check significance value in chi-square table. If that number is less than .05 then reject null hypothesis so there is a significant relationship between the variables.

Example:
Our group has done chi square test for marital status and their education for data in GSS933 subset file
Null Hypothesis:  There is no relationship between Education and Marital status.
Hypothesis: There is relationship between Education and Marital status (since significance value in chi-square table is less than .05 we are rejecting the null hypothesis).
